September will never not feel like back to school in our hearts. In our minds right now, though, it’s Fashion Month. Either way, this is the time to take stock of, and stock up on, exciting on-trend pieces for the year ahead.
Inspired by the fall/winter 2019 collections shown in New York, London, Milan and Paris, Bare Necessities buyer Heather Viskovic found the bras that complement the clothes we’re most excited to wear this season. “A lot of these colors and prints aren’t traditionally fall, which is what makes them so interesting,” she said. Like, for instance…
The Trend: Lilac, but Make it Fall
The Bras: Dita Von Teese Madame X Demi Cage Bra in Lilac, Wacoal Basic Beauty T-Shirt Bra in Chalk Violet, Wacoal Embrace Lace Plunge Bra in Lilac Gray, Panache Cari T-Shirt Bra in Dove, DKNY Litewear Convertible T-Shirt Bra in Lilac/Silver
The Look: “Lilac and lavender aren’t just for spring anymore,” said Heather. “These are really feminine colors, and at the moment they’re very fresh and unexpected.” Pale plum, like the icy pastels shown at Badgley Mischka, Missoni, Kate Spade and Emilia Wickstead, is the perfect foil for more typical autumn tones like camel, olive and black. Because it’s such a quiet shade of purple, you can wear a lilac bra under all the same things that would normally have you reaching for your particular brand of nude, like sheer blouses and cream-colored knits.
The Trend: Blue + Purple = Blurple
The Bras: Wacoal Retro Chic Bra in Deep Ultramarine, Chantelle Parisian Allure Lace Plunge Bra in Blue Klein, Freya Sonic High Impact Underwire Sports Bra in Ocean Fever
The Look: This deep, super-saturated shade, also known as cosmic blue or International Klein Blue, has such presence to it that it really manages to hold its own in chillier weather. “It’s luxe, it’s regal and it’s as warm as a cool hue can get,” said Heather, who noticed it surfacing in both eveningwear and sportswear at designers as diverse as Tod’s, Dries Van Noten and Christian Siriano. If you want to feel like a total standout, a bra in this heavenly hue is the way to do it.
The Trend: Jewel-Tone Florals
The Bras: Fantasie Imogen Side Support Bra in Almond Blossom, Panache Jasmine Balconette Bra in Paisley, Goddess Kayla Side Support Bra in Cherry Blossom
The Look: There are no dainty wallflowers here; only fall florals packing a colorful punch. “To me, florals popping off a neutral background scream fall fashion,” Heather said. “The Imogen in particular is giving me all kinds of pumpkin spice vibes.” Unlike summer, when it’s 24/7 skin-tone T-shirt bras, now is an ideal time to experiment with supportive three- or four-part cups in happy-making prints. Under a chunky sweater, no one will be the wiser.
The Trend: Gray Lady
The Bra: Simone Perele Andora 3D Convertible Plunge T-Shirt Bra in Metallic, Empreinte Melody Seamless Bra in Glacier
The Look: This cool, refreshing twist on gray already promises to be huge for fall and even stick around through spring, said Heather, taking multiple looks from Sies Marjan as confirmation. The latest variations have nothing to do with dull gray as we know it: With blue undertones, as in the Andora, it reads more natural bluestone or slightly sage; the Melody almost has a shimmery touch of moss green to it. “They’re flattering neutrals that won’t wash you out,” said Heather. “These two bras are the first to drop in this color. More styles are coming later in the season, so keep an eye out.”
